Houx Upholstery is a small bespoke upholstery service based in Bristol. I work using both modern and traditional techniques and offer a friendly and personalised service.
With a woven textile design background, I am in my element when it comes to advising and sourcing fabrics that are suitable for your project, if help is needed. I have a keen eye for detail and a love of colour, texture and shape. I am happiest when working with my hands and it is a joy to bring a new lease of life to much loved furniture pieces.
I am currently taking on small furniture upholstery projects, including Ottoman boxes, scatter cushions and window seat commissions.
Do get in touch if you have a project in mind - I'd love to hear from you!
Reupholster or recover?

Reupholster: The furniture needs all new insides. I will strip the piece right back down to the frame. I will then rebuild using new fibre if it is a traditional piece or new foam if it is a modern piece.

Recover: If the insides of your furniture feels comfortable and the foam or fibre inside your piece is in a good condition it may just need a new cover.
Traditional or Modern?

Traditional: Reupholstering using a traditional technique usually involves using fibre (coir), cattle/horse hair, hessian and twine to create the inside structure of the piece. This process can be quite labour intensive and generally takes longer than the modern technique. It is a wonderful process and offers a more sustainable alternative to foam.
Modern: Modern techniques are used on furniture post-1950s. Modern upholstery uses foam, staples and modern materials to create the inside structure of the piece. This method is usually quicker and more cost-effective than traditional.
